Research project (§ 26 & § 27)
Duration : 2018-01-31 - 2019-01-30

The actual knowledge about the number and distribution of the European beaver (Castor fiber) in Lower Austria is mainly based on data collected during the ongoing beaver management activities and by mapping activity signs of beavers in spatially limited areas (e.g. project 'Beaver Census in Lower Austria - winter 2017/18'). The aim of this project is to continue the collection and actualisation of beaver distribution data (location of territories and number of residents) to investigate the development of the local beaver population and the ongoing colonization. The study area comprises i) a watersystem in an agricultural area of the continental biogeographical region and ii) a watersystem located in the alpine biogeographical region of Lower Austria.

In the winter period 2013/14 the provincial government of Lower Austria issued a new time-limited regulation, which allows the harassment and shooting of grey herons in the country. An accompanying monitoring program was assigned. In spring 2018 and 2020 a survey will take place to collect data about the actual number of grey heron breeding pairs and the status of the breeding localities. The survey program will also include site control by plane along the river March; official records about shot grey herons will be evaluated.

Since the mid-eighties the increasing number of migrating cormorants, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, in middle Europe during the winter season has become a subject of severe conflicts and ongoing discussions between various interest groups. Lower Austria issued a derogation rule which allows the harassment and shooting of cormorants along defined river sections mainly focusing on trout and grayling regions. Simultaneous roost counts are carried out to collect data about the wintering population, an overview about the reported shooting records will be presented also by the end of the season.
